Although traveling and intermittent separations from one's spouse have become commonplace, the effects upon marriages has not been thoroughly researched. The present study evaluates the cognitive component of expectations for its influence upon marital satisfaction for those individuals who travel from their spouse. The Relationship Belief Inventory was employed to assess the functionality and dysfunctionality of individual's relationship beliefs. Support was found for the RBI's ability to predict functionality in expectation categories at both separation and reunion. Expectations regarding sexual behavior and communication were found to be the most salient during separation, while expectations regarding communication, child care and household labor were important at reunion. Individuals who demonstrated functionality on the RBI also demonstrated high marital adjustment on the Marital Adjustment Test, while those with dysfunctional scores on the RBI reflected poor marital adjustment. Finally individuals with functional expectations had scores which correlated with functionality on the RBI measure and individuals demonstrating dysfunctional scores on expectation measure had dysfunction scores on the RBI. Future research in the area of understanding the dynamics of intermittent separations are discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
