This study which is based on selected songs from Hugo Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch reflects the premiss that a better understanding and a deeper appreciation of both the overall and the deeper structures of a musical composition will prove effective in the development of a sound teaching and performing technique.

The songs are subjected to appropriate analysis of the technical and musical devices Wolf employed in order to interrelate the harmonic, structural and technical aspects of the musc, thereby portraying and enhancing the meaning of the text. The significance of chords, tones and forms in relation to the music's overall structure is examined. In order to demonstrate the relation of the text to the music, the stylistic and interpretive characteristics of the scores are discussed.

The first step in the preparation of this dissertation was the examination of major biographies and reference texts, for example, Frank Walker's Hugo Wolf: A Biography which is based on extracts from Wolf's letters and facsimiles. This was followed by research into the development of the German Art Song from 1250-1750, from the Minnesingers and Meistersingers to the second half of the eighteenth century.

The songs from the Italienisches Liederbuch were selected to correspond with chosen criteria, for example, harmonic craftsmanship and technical brilliance. The major part of the dissertation involves the interpretive analysis of the songs with relevant musical illustrations. The final chapter examines the educational implementations of the study, focusing on the fact that Wolf's songs, although acknowledged to be masterpieces of compositional brilliance, have not acquired the popularity they deserve.

It is concluded that Wolf's songs cannot be fully understood and appreciated unless they are subjected both to critical analysis and to consistent familiarization with the music. The purpose of this study may therefore be achieved if teaching institutions include a course of study for singers and pianists alike in an attempt to encourage the study and performance of Wolf's Lieder, thereby fostering increased devotion and appreciation of this great composer's work.
