School violence is a problem that is linked to changes within our culture and society. Significant changes in family structure contribute to the problems that educators see in schools (Leon, Mayer, Malmgren, & Meisel, 2001). This study investigated the application of the social control theory of Travis Hirschi (DeMelo, 1999b) and Ivan Nye (O'Conner, 2004) to the behavior and academic success of students. Data for students from an entire population of one school system for two separate years was used to determine the impact of family structure on student success.

The sample included approximately 5,000 students each year, and students who were enrolled for the entire school year with the exception of juvenile incarceration were included in each applicable analysis. This study analyzed eleven hypotheses with either ANOVA or multiple regression analyses.

This study concluded that family structure does have a significant impact on student behavior at school and academic success. The ANOVA analyses found that students from non-traditional family structures fare worse in terms of both behavior and academic success. More specifically, students from "other" structures such as grandparents or foster families have the most difficulties. The demographic variables of race, gender, and socio-economic status also impact student performance, and these variable sometimes significantly interact with family structure. The multiple regression analyses resulted in the creation of models to represent the impact of family structure; however, the amount of variance accounted for by the models was typically less than 20%, which means that other important factors are not accounted for in the model. All analyses were tested at the p < .05 level of significance.
