The effects of the supervisory working alliance, as defined by Bordin (1983), on two supervision outcomes (trainee counseling skills and personal development) were examined. Supervisors of the high working alliance groups rated factors of trainee counseling skills and personal development significantly higher than supervisors in low working alliance supervision relationships. Rapport in the supervisory working alliance had the greatest impact on supervisor ratings. Trainee self-ratings of counseling skills and personal development were not affected by high or low supervisory working alliance. The client focus factor of the supervisory working alliance had no impact on any of the dependent measures of counseling skills and personal development. Implications for future research and the practice of supervision are offered.
