The current study examined the influence of: (1) mother and father attachment security (The Security Scale) and (2) maltreatment group (comparison vs. maltreated) on physiological responsivity to conflict (videos) in a preadolescent group aged 10-13. Although some studies have examined the relationship between attachment, maltreatment and physiology, few have examined primary attachments with both mother and father, or used exogenous physiological variables to measure parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic (SNS) nervous system responsivity.

520 $a We hypothesized that children who had (1) lower attachment security with mother and father and (2) experienced maltreatment, would show hyper SNS and PNS responsivity. The results of these hypotheses, tested via structural equation modeling, showed that maltreatment group moderated the relationship between father security and both PNS and SNS responsivity. We concluded that within the maltreatment group lower father security predicted hyper PNS responsivity and within the comparison group higher father security predicted hyper SNS responsivity.
