In the past five years, Pilates training has become an increasingly popular method of physical conditioning. Most of the attention in the media has stressed how Pilates strengthens and tones the body. However, anecdotal reports suggest that Pilates training may have wide-ranging, transformative effects on its practitioners' overall physical and psychological well being. In these instances, Pilates training appears to function as a mind-body practice rather than simply a form of physical conditioning.

To investigate these claims, an exploratory qualitative study was carried out using a multiple case study format. Eleven white women, aged 41 to 72, were interviewed about their Pilates experiences. The women had practiced for at least two years and considered Pilates their main form of exercise. The participants were found through contacts with Pilates instructors using a purposive sampling strategy. Using a within-case and a cross-case analysis, the data were analyzed to determine how Pilates had affected their overall well being.

Nine women experienced significant transformations in their lives. Forty effects were found. From most to least reported, they fell into eight wide-ranging areas: mind-body relationship, work life/daily activities, physical changes, personality, personal growth, emotions, energy, and relationships. Four themes emerged from these effects. From most to least reported these were Effectiveness in the World (EM, Increased Comfort with the Body (ICB), Emotional Well Being (EWB) and Awareness (AW). Individual case summaries described the women's experiences in terms of these effects and themes.

Two patterns stood out in the data. Women who reported high numbers of ICB types of effects also ranked high in EIW effects. Similarly, women who reported high numbers of ICB effects also ranked high in EWB effects. These associations suggested that becoming more comfortable with one's body might be related to more effective functioning in the world and to greater emotional well being. EIW effects were reported nearly twice as often as EWB effects. The study found that Pilates training could have significant transformative effects on a woman's life.
