This study is an exploratory, descriptive examination of the ways in which elders use reminiscence as a means of creating meaning in order to construct identity. This study bridges the clinical and empirical literatures. Twelve participants were interviewed, ages 61-80 with an equal number of men and women. The sample was a mainly middle-class, retired, suburban population. Two of the participants were African-American, one Hispanic-American and two Holocaust survivors. Early memories were explored and found to be projective of goals and character structure. The first memory (M1) given was especially emotionally charged and needed to be explored empathically. Reminiscences are "guiding fictions" (Adler in Ansbacher & Ansbacher, 1956) that provide the sense of continuity for the self, and this sense of continuity is what Erikson referred to as "identity." Reminiscence (Wong & Watt, 1991) and narrative schemas (Gergen & Gergen, 1983; McAdams, 1993) were employed in order to help assess the resolution of Erikson's 8th stage (Erikson, 1959; Erikson, Erikson, & Kivnick, 1986) of Integrity vs. Despair. Of 12 participants, 6 are in the Integrity mode, 3 are at the balance point, and 3 are in the Despair mode. While these numbers are illustrative, because of the small sample size, the study casts some doubt on the excessively rosy picture that is often painted in the clinical literature for the role of reminiscence. (Those in the despair mode would need further work to complete their unfinished business as they move through Stage 8, which might include exploratory psychotherapy (Cohler & Galatzer-Levy, 1990).) This study showed the fruitfulness of combining disparate literatures--reminiscence, identity theory, early memories and narrative to develop a more holistic view of the elder (Josselson, 1994).
