This work examines the primary works of Nagarjuna (second century), and the relationship between his logical method and his use of Buddhist scripture. Western scholarship on the Mulamadhyamakakarika has tended to focus exclusively on the issues of its logical and philosophical constitution. So far no serious study has been done on Nagarjuna's use of scripture. In this work, I argue that one of the primary concerns of Nagarjuna's major work, the Mulamadhyamakakarika, is to show that the fundamental doctrine of the Mahayana scriptures, the doctrine of "emptiness," falls within the scope of the teachings of the Buddhist canon, and hence, can be classed as "Word of the Buddha" (buddhavacana). I argue that he establishes its status as "Word of the Buddha" through a combination of logic and scriptural allusion. Further, I argue that Nagarjuna places emptiness in the context of the canon in such a way that emptiness becomes the most fundamental category on which all other categories are based.

Hence, (contrary to much scholarship) Nagarjuna was not against the Abhidharma, nor does he reject their system of categorization. In fact, he includes a number of such lists in his own work (in the Ratnavali and the Mulamadhyamakakarika). He does, however, displace these lists in favor of the doctrine of emptiness. I trace this displacement of the canonical categories through the "four noble truths," "the twelve links of dependent origination," "the five aggregates," and "the six elements." By showing how Nagarjuna's reading subtly shifts the interpretation of canonical passages from their usual reading I describe the exegetical genius of Nagarjuna which, in effect, extends the doctrinal domain of the canon to include Mahayana doctrines such as emptiness. Such an extension was facilitated through a kind of legal fiction showing that the canonical categories themselves had always relied on emptiness. By doing so Mahayana can claim that the "Word of the Buddha" is empty.
