The purpose of this investigation was to study incubation in the creative process of heuristic inquiry and artistic production. A critical review of the relevant literature indicated the need for an expansion of current investigational methods. It was argued that an investigation of incubation calls for a research framework that considers epistemological and psychological elements.

The purpose of this investigation was to study incubation in the creative process of heuristic inquiry and artistic production. A critical review of the relevant literature indicated the need for an expansion of current investigational methods. It was argued that an investigation of incubation calls for a research framework that considers epistemological and psychological elements.

The study involved the researcher as a participant observer. To observe and experience incubation, four trials were conducted over a period of 30 days. Data were collected on the full creative process of collage production on the themes incubation, beauty, immigration, and love. Each trial generated a series of visual and written data that detailed the cognitive-mental and sensory-perceptual aspects of the heuristic experience.

Upon accumulation of the raw data in all four trials, the data on incubation were separated. The visual data (.gif) were processed by use of semiotics. The signification of the meaning content of the data provided a basis for the development of meaning toward the theoretical understanding of the incubation experience, including the discovery of psychological patterns and trends. In addition, a comparative analysis based on Jung's patterns of symbol formation indicated semblance with the psychophysical patterns and trends of the incubation experience.

The findings suggest: (1) incubation can be viewed as a range of codetermining cognitive-mental and sensory-perceptual processes, (2) the distinct psychophysical states during incubation can be defined as immersion, apprehension, fragmentation, stagnation, rupture, liquefying, and synthesis, and (3) the repeated experience of psychological discomfort during incubation can lead to the development of tolerance of these elevated states during creative process.

A replication of the study is recommended to determine whether the findings must be considered idiosyncratic or can generalize to other individuals.
