The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between two sets of variables: the employment experiences, education and attitudes of mothers to child care and work on the one hand, and the experiences and attitudes of their daughters on the other. How does full-time or part-time work by their mother during specific stages of children's lives affect their occupational expectations and attainments? How do the attitudes of mothers towards child care and work influence the attitudes of their daughters?

Results indicate that the employment, education and attitudes of mothers are important predictors of the educational and occupational plans and attainments of young women in 1989 and in 2000. Although the findings provide evidence of a link between these two sets of variables, the experiences and attitudes of young women in 2000 are comparatively different from those of their mothers 17 years earlier. Results were examined in conjunction with a life-course analysis and theories of capital. The experiences of mothers were found to be highly predictive of both the plans and experiences of their daughters. As such, maternal employment can be highly positive for the plans and attainments of young women. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
