A new paradigm shift for the paralegal profession is proposed-one that looks at leadership development as a means to greater effectiveness as practitioners and options for sustained success in the 21st century. The results of this study will be instrumental in developing a foundational framework for a 2-year and a 4-year educational program for aspiring and current paralegals that includes leadership, personal ethics, and coaching instructional components. The research questions guiding this study were: (a) What degree of importance do paralegals place on the development of leadership knowledge and skills for sustainable professional development and advancement within the paralegal profession? To what degree do paralegals believe that leadership knowledge and skills should be included in an ABA approved paralegal program? (b) What level of importance do paralegals assign to understanding how to integrate ethics into daily life? To what degree do paralegals believe that ethics should be addressed in an ABA approved paralegal program? (c) How do paralegals rate the importance of developing coaching skills to guide legal services team members to enhance their ability to achieve business results? To what degree do paralegals believe that coaching should be included in an ABA approved paralegal program?

Findings indicate that practicing paralegals believe that leadership, personal ethics, and coaching are important to their future careers and should be included ABA approved paralegal preparation programs. This study concluded that ABA approved paralegal programs need to address these three elements and that firms employing paralegals need to continue development in these areas.
