Thesis (M.S.D.)--Arizona State University, 2006.
Industrial design professionals acknowledge that utilizing research in the new product development process benefits the user because it results in products that are more suited to user needs and preferences. Practitioners and educators also contend that ethnography promotes the generation of more creative design solutions. The goal of undergraduate industrial design education is to prepare future industrial design professionals to design creative products.

The study relies upon work completed by 45 senior undergraduate students enrolled in the industrial design program at Arizona State University between 1998 and 2001. Each student designed a birdfeeder concept before and after participating in an ethnographic observation exercise that involved viewing birds at a birdfeeder. Based upon the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT) used in creativity research, twenty-four domain experts assessed the pairs of design concepts with acceptable reliability.

This thesis addresses the overlap of three primary areas of concentration: industrial design, ethnographic observation and creativity research. The study provides empirical evidence that the introduction of an ethnographic observation exercise during the design process resulted in more creative student design solutions. Findings suggest that the facilitation of creativity during the design process can be improved through introduction of an ethnographic observation exercise. Given the suitability of the CAT for this study and based upon follow-up interviews with assessors, this thesis provides evidence that the intersection of these fields is a fertile area for mutually beneficial future investigation.
