Modern-day institutions in America are experiencing several challenges in operating their organization. Reduced budgets and downsizing of staff have become common signs of organizational change associated with global competition. Many of the public service institutions are finding it necessary to rely more on the skills and talents of the volunteer staff in order to support the reorganizing process that effects their goals and objectives. Nonprofit institutions have continued to provide a unique service to the community due in part to the dedication and commitment of the volunteer workforce.Subjects--Topical Terms:

As the nonprofit institutions continue to depend on the volunteer staff for service of time and talents, there is sometimes a challenge to recruit and retain the qualified volunteer. Administrators and managers cannot discount the importance of the volunteer workforce within their organization. Developing or improving existing volunteer programs will be paramount for modern nonprofit organizations as they strive to meet the service-oriented goals of their institution. Today, there are more community service organizations contributing to the well being of the common person. As society and business environments change, so too will the philosophy of administrators and managers as they recruit and retain the valued volunteer workforce.

Henry Ford Estate--Fair Lane is the subject of this study. As a nonprofit institution, it has experienced several changes associated with the shifts in the economy, such as the reduction of government grants and the increase in overhead expenses in running a business. The reduction of management and support staff was presented as a cost-saving measure 3 years ago. Paid staff have been cross-trained to assume additional responsibilities. A greater reliance on the volunteer staff has resulted in a greater need for qualified and reliable volunteers to serve in a variety of assignments.

The purpose of this study was to contribute to the literature in the area of organizational change as it effects nonprofit institutions and their recruitment and retention of the volunteer staff. As nonprofit institutions continue to grow, so does the need for volunteers. Information related to absenteeism and turnover of volunteer staff was developed and also included information presented from the respondents within this study at Fair Lane.
