Nonprofit organizations are increasingly filling the gap between the business and government sectors of developed economies as the need for community services expands. With the careers of both business and public administration graduates continuing to cross traditional disciplinary lines, management programs must build awareness of the uniqueness of nonprofit organizations.

An exploratory study was undertaken to determine the extent to which undergraduate management students at small liberal arts colleges are exposed to the management of non-profit organizations. A grounded theory approach was used to look for emerging patterns.

The target population of 138 schools was determined by analyzing the descriptions of programs of study and student enrollments contained in published college guides. Those undergraduate liberal arts schools with an identified management program and some combination of public administration or other interdisciplinary program besides business were considered. Those with enrollments between 1,000 and 3,500 students were selected. The study consisted of a survey specifically developed to address the stated research questions and sent to the vice president of academic affairs at each institution within the target population.

Data from the 33% of the surveys returned identified 12 schools that have committed to, and seven that anticipate future, nonprofit management programs. Three models of successful programs in nonprofit management seem to be emerging within small liberal arts schools: a concentration in non-profit management, an integrated management program which includes nonprofits, and a certificate program in nonprofit management. An interdisciplinary approach is more likely to result in a successful program.

However, 25 schools were not interested in pursuing such programs. Further, schools with enrollments below 1,500 students are not as likely to have the means to support an effective program. The study outlines areas where increased efforts are needed for the success of nonprofit management programs, and suggests areas where further research is needed.
