Thesis (M.S.)--Nyack College, 2006.
African-American and Afro-Caribbean women are more likely to maintain higher body weights then women of other races. To address the issue of obesity in the black culture, specifically women of color, we explored various transformational and self-leadership models to provide the necessary tools to help these women achieve and maintain long-term weight loss. Fourteen women of color were asked to participate in this case study. These women were chosen based on several criteria: their affiliation with an Afro-Caribbean family-owned fitness center located in a predominately black middle class community, their participation in a weight loss or fitness program and have experienced weight lost and regain of their weight. Based on the results, the successful women who kept the weight off for a period of time used transformational and self-leadership models to reach and maintain their weight loss goals.
