The subject of our research is the poetic work of Vigneault and its relation with the Middle Ages. We are interested in the use of the past in the representation of the nation that constitutes an important aspect of the author's message and style. Traces of the past, more especially medieval ones, in his poems are relics of and witnesses to the nation that once was and the foundations of a nation yet to be made.

Vigneault's poems are at the heart of this study in which we establish links between his poetry and the poems of the Middle Ages. It shows how and why his poetry is anchored in this period. The author uses linguistic, discursive, cultural, and thematic elements inherited from the past and recontextualizes them in his poems.

To further good understanding of the subject, its historical, social, and cultural context is defined in the first chapter. In the three following chapters, we identify concepts that bear medieval traces. The role of the poet, his poetic forms (ballad), and his poetic themes (courtly love) are analyzed in the second chapter. The last two chapters are dedicated to the lexicon. In chapter 3, analysis of the vocabulary shows ancient elements that are used, some with considerable frequency. In chapter 4, the semantic study of lexical elements shows words identified as evocations of the Middle Ages (castle) and references to the past (ancient, old), and these elements contribute greatly to the romanticized image of the past that characterizes his poetry.

By his work and by the language he uses, by his interaction with the public and by the instrumental role that he plays in the process of creating a collective imagination, Vigneault extends the self-defining roots of Quebec into a romanticized idea of the Middle Ages. Multiple timeframes intertwine in his work, articulating a new country and representing modern humanity, anchored in the Middle Ages and preparing the future. Faithful to his people's heritage and roots, he transforms and reinvents his memories to transmit them in turn, his work becoming an instrument of the nation's self-determination.
