This study explores the image of self and other, East and West, in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arabic prose narratives, by focusing on the journey to Europe in these texts. It divides this image into two dominant types: utopian and nationalist, which are sometimes transcended into a third one: dialectical. These images are defined with reference to Tzvetan Todorov's definition of exoticism, ethnocentrism, nationalism, and relativism. Accordingly, the utopian image idealizes the other; the nationalist idealizes the self; while the dialectical negotiates the two. Although the three images are not chronological, the first one tends to come in the first stage of contact with the other, the second after confrontation with it, while the third after a long period of contact with the other and debate about it. During the period that this study covers, roughly from the 1830s to the 1960s, the early image of Europe (early to mid-nineteenth century) was predominantly utopian, as colonialism was not fully established yet in the Arab world. In the late nineteenth century, that image became predominantly anti-utopian, as more Arab lands were falling under European colonial rule. In the twentieth century, the above two images recurred, but they became more secular. Finally, in the post-colonial period, a more dialectical image that negotiates the other two appeared.

This study explores the image of self and other, East and West, in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arabic prose narratives, by focusing on the journey to Europe in these texts. It divides this image into two dominant types: utopian and nationalist, which are sometimes transcended into a third one: dialectical. Since the above three patterns are analyzed within the context of the modern theory of self and other, they are compared at the beginning to the general perception of the other found in all cultures. In addition to these cultural patterns, the study attempts to find a literary pattern that corresponds to the cultural one. This is done first by highlighting the connection between the pattern of the journey to Europe in each text and its image of the other, and second by relating that image to the development of modern Arabic prose narratives that resulted from contact with the West.

The study arrives at the conclusion that both utopian and nationalist images need to be transcended to arrive at a dialectical image. This last one is the stage at which cultures can communicate in a healthy manner. To reach that stage, several obstacles need to be overcome. The two most important ones are colonialism and cultural ethnocentrism. Only then can one arrive at a human civilization that is diverse and unified at the same time.
