Women of the 21st century view aging differently from women of previous generations. Extended longevity and increased life expectancy experienced in the last half century continue to transform the way a woman ages and sees herself aging. Moreover, the Baby Boomers' forceful entry into the United States' economic, sociopolitical, and cultural scene is changing all prior concepts of aging, behavior, and appearance for those 60 and older. The apparel market and fashion industry have not yet responded to the sartorial needs of this female population; now, the emergence of millions of professional women over age 60, increasingly visible in the workplace and leading productive lifestyles in all realms of society, is requiring a new approach towards those sartorial necessities.

The purpose of this study is to explore and interpret the current sartorial needs and experiences of urban professional women over age 60. This qualitative research is based on interpretive inquiry using a hermeneutic phenomenology approach to understand the meanings of the everyday experience. Well-defined procedures for finding and interviewing participants allowed in-depth collaboration, close observations and visual assessment of apparel management. Ten real estate brokers living and working in Manhattan shared their everyday experiences and opinions specific to apparel purchase, use, and divestment. An adapted consumer decision process model (CDP) concerning apparel consumption behavior was used to help inform the results of the interview process and the interpretation.

The women's narratives reveal pertinent themes in three conceptual areas: modernity, professionalism, and the fashioning of the self. The participants/collaborators are professional women of modernity who effectively manage and enhance their working and personal lifestyle. Their rich lives had a transformative impact on me, the researcher, as I now have a deeper understanding of the vitality and productive engagement with life of older women.

This interpretive study uncovers gaps in current knowledge about the sartorial needs and desires of this age group and the meaning of dressing every day for work and its resulting effect on self-identity and wellbeing. Additionally, this study serves as a resource to improve the design, manufacturing, and selling of ready-to-wear apparel for professional older women.
