This dissertation is the first full-length biography of Gloria Richardson, the leader of Cambridge, Maryland's civil rights struggle during the years 1962-64. Its main focus is how Richardson encountered racist, classist, and sexist oppression and how she drew upon her various philosophies to effectively challenge these systems of domination.

520 $a Critical race feminist theory is the analytical tool I use to identify the explicit and implicit race, class, and gender issues pertaining to Richardson's life. I identified these issues through the close reading of various sources including newspaper and magazine articles, governmental documents, and organizations' papers that pertain to her activism and life. I also used Richardson's own writings, as well as stories gathered during peoples' interviews with her.
520 $a Interviewing was a major methodological technique I employed in this dissertation. I conducted in-person and telephone interviews with Gloria Richardson and other historical actors to learn about Richardson's life, work, and her social, political, and economic philosophies.
520 $a This dissertation shows that Richardson's intellect was a major component to her antiracist struggles in the Civil Rights Movement and it continues to serve as the foundation for her current activities in labor union activism. Furthermore, this project shows how Richardson's intellect and activism have had a discursive effect on her friends, coworkers (from the past and present), and the civil rights movement in general.
