The First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon, located at the crossroads of New Vernon, N.J. has always taught and believed that the Lord's Supper is the sign and seal of eating and drinking in communion with the crucified and risen Lord. The Lord's Supper has its origin in the life and mission of Jesus. Jesus invited us at the Last Supper to do the same as he did when he took bread and wine. The concern that prompted the launching of this project came from questions that the children of the First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon asked elders concerning the Sacrament called the Lord's Supper. The children wanted to know why their school friends who worshiped at the Catholic Church of Christ the King in New Vernon did things so differently. They asked, "Why do they have a special day?" "Why can't we get all dressed up and have a special party in Fellowship Hall after we receive the Bread and Cup for the first time?" These children had a great thirst and desire to understand the Lord's Supper and to experience this Sacrament in a new and special way.

As the Director of Youth and Family Life Ministries of the First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon (FPCNV), my purpose for this project was to introduce a new and creative formation process for the reception of the Lord's Supper for children between the ages of six (6) through eight (8). Regardless of the many denominations, styles, or traditions in faith communities, believers throughout the world are rediscovering the importance of designing and implementing a more formal preparation for this meaningful celebration. This project has been successful in framing, constructing and implementing a faith based reception of the Sacrament of The Lord's Supper for the children of the (FPCNV). The goal of this project was to have these children, who are coming to the Lord's Table, receive the Bread and Cup and understand that coming to the Table is a privilege given to all who come in faith, are willing to ask for forgiveness and accept forgiveness and love their neighbors. In preparing to receive this Sacrament the children learned how to ask for forgiveness and feel happy once again instead of sad, trusting in Jesus Christ for this cleansing and renewal.

The children concluded their six-month program with a Teaching Meal hosted by the Elders of Session. This was a reenactment of the Last Supper that included all the foods that Jesus and his disciples might have eaten. For their celebration of the Lord's Supper the children baked loves of bread to be served at this meal and shared the following day with the entire congregation. This program met with great success and was adopted by Session as part of the formal Christian Education curriculum for the second Grade children, making it an annual Sacramental celebration. This was not only a teaching and learning experience for the children, but for the entire congregation. The church members fully embraced and supported the children. The community at the FPCNV was beginning to become fractured, but was brought together in a joyful celebration, getting to know one another on a more intimate and personal way.
