This study examined the possible effects of a values education intervention through therapeutic recreation on value priorities of adolescents residing in a children's psychiatric center. Consent forms were distributed to 52 potential participants between the ages of 12 and 18 years. Of the 18 respondents, 8 participated in the treatment group, and 10 in the control group.

Each participant completed a pretest, a modified version of the Rokeach Value Survey, which measures both instrumental and terminal value priorities. The treatment group members then participated in a 4-week values education intervention that was administered through their therapeutic recreation programs, and on an individualized basis. At the end of the 4 weeks, participants in both the treatment and control groups completed a posttest, which again was a modified version of the Rokeach Value Survey.

Differences relative to the mean difference scores for each of the 12 values on the pre- and posttest for the treatment and control groups were analyzed. No significant difference in mean difference scores of the intervention was evident in five variables: broadmindedness, honesty, responsibility, a world at peace, and social recognition. There was a significant difference in the mean difference scores of the intervention variable, freedom, between the treatment and control groups. Between-group comparisons showed no significant difference in the mean difference scores between the treatment and control groups for the remaining control variables: cheerfulness, independence, self-control, equality, national security, and pleasure.

The significant difference in the scores relative to freedom may indicate that the intervention should be further investigated. The small sample size in combination with the high number (12) of covariates may have led to spurious results. Therefore, future research with a larger sample size may be warranted.
