Thesis (Ed.D.)--Harvard University, 2006.
Everyday extraordinary moments at one site, a Puerto Rican Protestant high school, are analyzed at three different levels: the macro-historical, the institutional, and the personal. The intersection of Weber's concept of charisma, Victor Turner's theory of the centrality of liminality and communitas to ritual, and Johannes Fabian's notion of " moments of freedom" suggest the possibility of this category of analysis. "Charisma" is used to analyze the school's founding, and the broader context of mid-20th century Puerto Rico. Liminality is used to analyze how the school's religious pedagogy seeks to promote extraordinary experiences of connection to God. A distinction is made between the school's "curriculum of love," which conflicts with the school's disciplinary structure and with wider hierarchies in the society, and its "curriculum of purity," which marks some differences and rejects ambiguity. Graduates and students of the school show evidence of transforming future practices of Christianity, in unexpected ways, evidencing "moments of freedom".
