Dantin University was founded by a small business owner, in the first half of 20th century as a small college, located in a growing metropolitan city. Several years later, Dantin College gained university status when a school of law was added and the business and education departments became separate schools. Today, Dantin has five schools of learning and has since relocated to a smaller town adjacent to the city of its origin and maintains its original church affiliation; however, it operates nonsectarian and independent of ecclesiastical controls. The focus of the research was Dantin's Kylan College. Kylan is the university's residential college of letters, arts and sciences, enrolling approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Philip George University first opened its doors as a small liberal arts college in the late 19th century in the heart of one of the biggest metropolises in the world. Since its founding, Philip George has added 16 professional schools that now provide a diverse array of academic offerings to its students. Additionally, it is one of the oldest independent teaching and research universities west of the Mississippi River.

This research includes a literature review examining the factors that influence alcohol use; policies and programs implemented by other institutions; the decision making processes used to formulate and implement policies and programs; and the analysis of institutional documents and interviews with twenty-one key university leaders. The study describes how each institution defined its problem(s) associated with alcohol, identifies who was involved in the decision making, and discovers the approaches and strategies used to address the alcohol abuse problem(s).
