Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1993.
This dissertation mainly aims to advance the investigation of Chinese mythology through comparing it with its Korean counterpart, because China and Korea have maintained close historical and cultural ties as geographic neighbors. As for materials, I have made a comprehensive collection of mythic materials from the ancient classics and oral traditions of both countries, and have selected several common motifs that bear comparison to each other. In order to evaluate most effectively the characteristics of both mythologies I emphasize the following three aspects. Firstly, I investigate similarities and differences in structure and content, origins, and mutual relations from a synchronic perspective. Secondly, I further examine their individual characteristics and common ideas of ancient man by comparing them to corresponding worldwide myths. Finally, I research how the myths of both countries as primary sources have influenced later literary works, and how they themselves have been transformed.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In chapter one as an introduction, I give a new definition of the word "myth" through the re-observation of the origin and characteristics of the myth. In chapter two, I reviewed some general aspects of Chinese and Korean mythology, and re-examine Kim Chae-won's comparative study approach which is very significant in the comparative study of Chinese and Korean mythology. Chapter three, as the main chapter, deals with the motifs of creation, the hero, rebirth, and the flood. The motif of creation includes world creation, human creation, and cosmology. The motif of the hero contains the type, birth, and life-cycle of the hero. In dealing with the rebirth motif, I added the comparison of primitive thought and Buddhism. In chapter four, I investigate how the myths of China and Korea have influence later literature, especially fiction and poetry. Finally, I attach an analysis study of the dating of the Shan Hai Jing and Mu Tia Zhuan, based on linguistic evidence.
