This action research project examines the delivery of education to Support Services staff in New Vista Society (NVS), a long-term care facility. The research answers the question: what are the educational needs of Support Services staff and how can a system of "near miss" reporting be implemented thereby creating continued opportunities for learning?

The research establishes the application of heutagogy, developing capacity and group education processes to ensure learning for this unionized group of staff. Further, the research establishes the need for knowledge management systems to ensure near misses traditionally associated with error are re-created as an opportunity for learning.

Key to the findings are the need to plan, schedule and provide educational opportunities. By supporting the development of meaningful educational systems, the employer fosters the capacity of Support Services staff to provide necessary services for residents.
