This retrospective descriptive study explored the relationship between frequent suctioning and the risk of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). The Neuman Systems Model served as a base for retrospective chart review of the health records of adult patients 18 years and older, admitted to the critical care unit (CrCU) in 2002 who required ventilator assistance at a trauma hospital in Eastern Canada. Descriptive statistics and one sample t-test were utilized to analyze the data. This study was conducted to support that patients who were suctioned over 16 times per day for one week have a lesser risk of developing VAP than those who were suctioned 16 times or fewer.
