In four studies conducted between 1992 and 1999, I investigated song bird neuroanatomy and song behavior in marsh wrens, sedge warblers, and zebra finches. In my first study I tested whether differential experience that leads to differences in adult song repertoire would affect dendritic spine density in HVc (also called high vocal center) and RA (robustus archistriatalis). Juvenile eastern marsh wrens (Cistothorus palustris) were tape tutored with either 5 or 45 song types. As adults, the small repertoire group had learned mostly 5 or 6 song types, the large repertoire group 36 to 47. Wrens that learned the large song repertoires had a greater dendritic spine density for the most spiny neurons present in HVc (mean, 36%), but not in RA. In my second study, I tested two predictions in sedge warblers ( Acrocephalus schoenobaenus), that males with more complex songs will have a larger main song control nucleus (HVc), and that males who pair successfully will have a larger HVc than unpaired males. Data were collected from a field study on a wild population breeding in Hungary. I found significant positive correlations between measures of song complexity and the size of HVc. Males which paired successfully also had more complicated songs. However I found no evidence that males who paired successfully had a larger HVc than unpaired males. In my third study I investigated song complexity and brain anatomy in male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata castanotis). Consistent with previous studies in other song birds, song complexity correlates with the volume of the telencephalic song control nucleus HVc. I also showed that repertoire size in zebra finches can be predicted by variance in multiple song system brain nuclei. In my fourth study, in order to better understand the development and evolution of gross song system anatomy, I conducted a quantitative genetic study of the volumes of five Nissl-defined song control nuclei in zebra finches.
