This study was designed to clarify the nature of motor imitation deficits in autism. Five critical components of imitation were assessed in a sample of 19 high-functioning children with autism, compared to a sample of 19 children with developmental dyslexia matched on age and Verbal IQ. Specific tasks and within-subjects experiments were used to examine basic motor functioning, body schema, spatiotemporal representation, memory, and motor execution. Task stimuli were non-meaningful, intransitive hand and arm gestures that varied in length and complexity.

Consistent with previous research, subjects with autism demonstrated overall worse imitation of non-meaningful gestures. An analysis of their performance revealed a specific pattern of impairment, which was characterized by difficulty with the kinesthetic aspects of postures and movements. Moreover, subjects with autism demonstrated differentially worse performance on kinesthetic transformations of complex, compared to simple movements.

These imitation deficits in the subjects with autism could not be accounted for by impairment in body schema, spatiotemporal representation, or memory. Subjects with autism did not differ from comparison subjects on these critical components of imitation. Subjects with autism did, however, demonstrate significant impairment on a task of basic motor functioning. Further analyses suggested that some, but not all of their imitation deficits might be related to these poor motor skills. Even after controlling for the effects of motor skill, subjects with autism showed deficits in kinesthetic transformations of complex movement sequences. This interaction with complexity may reflect a specific impairment in planning transformations involving kinesthetic information.

The results of this study provide support for the role of dyspraxia in the imitation deficit in autism, and suggest specific directions for further study and intervention.
