Pregnancy-related weight gain is frequently cited as a contributor to long-term weight increases in women. While gestational weight gain has been shown to be an important predictor of infant and maternal outcomes, there is a wide range of gain associated with good outcomes. It has been hypothesized that the pattern of gestational weight gain may have relevance for outcomes, including infant birthweight and maternal postpartum weight retention. Little methodologic work has been conducted to determine the differences between various methods of examining departures from typical patterns of gestational weight gain. The distribution of postpartum weight retention according to currently-recommended levels of gestational weight gain and the predictors of postpartum weight changes warrant additional research given the importance of overweight in Western societies.

520 $a This dissertation examines gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention using data from the After The Baby Comes (ABC) study, carried out at the US Naval Medical Center, San Diego (NMCSD) from 1997--1999. It first describes an in depth methodologic examination of four ways to characterize deviations from average gestational weight gain and how these deviations are associated with infant birthweight in a multivariable model.
