Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kent State University, 1995.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of marital quality and sense of coherence and social support in married men and married women. Three hypotheses were generated for the study. They included: (a) There will be a positive relationship between marital quality and sense of coherence in married men and married women; (b) There will be a positive relationship between quality and total functional support from four sources for married men and married women; (c) There will be a positive relationship between marital quality and total network properties for married men and married women. Instrumentation included the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC), and Norbeck's Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ). Demographic data was collected. Statistical analyses included use of Pearson product moment correlation analyses and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The sample studied consisted of 104 married men and 105 married women between ages 30-50, with at least one child under 18 years of age living in the home. A convenience sample taken from 19 sites (community and work groups and institutions) constituted the study population.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings included significant, positive relationships (a) between DAS and SOC for men, women, and the entire sample; (b) between DAS and spousal support for men, women, and the entire sample; (c) between Total DAS and subscale Affectional Expression and Total Functional Support for men; (d) between DAS subscales Dyadic Cohesion and Affectional Expression and Total Functional Support for the total sample; (e) between Total DAS and Family Support for men; (f) between DAS subscales Dyadic Satisfaction and Dyadic Cohesion and Family Support for women; (g) between DAS subscales Dyadic Cohesion and Affectional Expression and Family Support for the entire sample; and (h) between DAS subscale Affectional Expression and Total Network Properties and its subscales: Size, Duration of Relationships, and Frequency of Contact for men.

SOC and Spousal Support were found to be significant predictors of overall marital quality and all four marital quality subscales for men, women, and the entire sample with one exception. SOC was not a significant predictor of the DAS subscale, Dyadic Cohesion for men. Total Network Properties was found to be significant predictors of the DAS subscale Affectional Expression for men.
