This study focuses on understanding the dynamics of interdisciplinary teams working around a shared team workspace.

The study is a descriptive understanding of shared workspace activities of small interdisciplinary design teams working face-to-face during the design development process. Design teams involved were a part of InnovationSpace, an interdisciplinary design studio at Arizona State University, USA. Four disciplines of industrial design, visual communication design, engineering and business were a part of nine design teams working on three sponsored projects. The study demonstrates how video-based analysis is used to discover design implications for developing tools to support the participants' activities.

Interaction Analysis, a method developed by the Institute for Research and Learning (IRL) and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center was used for empirical investigation of interaction of participants with each other and with objects in the shared workspace. Video-based observations were conducted in the design studio with the purpose of providing a descriptive understanding of group behavior. Pre-observation and post-observation questionnaires were conducted to understand more detailed use of shared workspace by individual participants. A post-observation reaction questionnaire incorporated participants' views on interdisciplinary teams working around a shared workspace.

Observation and analysis of activities suggested that participants worked sequentially rather than collaboratively around the shared workspace. The shared workspace was used as individual workspace for discipline-specific activities. The activities of referencing, noting and emphasizing points were significant to the collaborative design process. This information provides a basis for future development of tools to assist interdisciplinary collaboration.
