This dissertation studies and evaluates the ways in which the modernist project is rooted in the medieval scholarship of late nineteenth-century France. I focus on the figure of Gaston Paris as the founder of French medievalism and his greatest invention---courtly love, which is often considered the medieval ideal of love.

The second half of the nineteenth century was an era torn between two philosophical perspectives---a pessimistic idea of decadence that valued the past, and an optimist belief in progress that favored the future. What we generally refer to as modernity evolved from both of these tendencies, through the strife for accepting and promoting both.

It is in the midst of this turmoil that we find the greatest figure of French medieval scholarship: Gaston Paris (1839--1903). True to his time, Paris embodied the contemporary dilemma, becoming at the same time the apostle of science as well as the erudite master of past work. I argue that this double focus is more than just interesting; it provides the first true model for reconciling the major modern dilemma.

I focus specifically on Gaston Paris's greatest invention courtly love, which is also one of the most debatable concepts in medieval scholarship. I reevaluate the concept in the literary and philosophical context of Decadence, which brings the contemporary dilemma to the heart of literature, and is strongly marked by the very forces that strived to resolve it.

One of the biggest enigmas surrounding the concept of courtly love, besides the fact of its very existence, is that it characterizes Lancelot's love but excludes Tristan's love. This dissertation will show, through a comparative reading of the medieval texts and of Paris's personal writings, that this work of inclusion and exclusion was not some personal whimsy on the part of Paris, but a reflection of his era's struggle for modernity.

Thus a modern medieval literature was in the making in late nineteenth-century France, but in the very footsteps of an early nineteenth century, which was still dreaming of an ancient medieval era.
