The purpose of this research was to examine any relationships between gender, Tennessee vocational rehabilitation participants' perceived involvement in their rehabilitation counseling programs, and their employment outcome in those programs. The participants were from the Tennessee Department of Human Services/Division of Rehabilitation Services, Vocational Rehabilitation program. The general research question addressed in this study was: Are there gender differences regarding vocational rehabilitation participants' perceived involvement in their rehabilitation counseling programs and their employment outcome in those programs? The specific research question was: After controlling for educational level, is the relationship between participants' perceived involvement and their employment outcome different for males and females? For the purpose of this study, the definition of involvement was the participants' perceived involvement in their rehabilitation program. The measurement of the participants' perceived involvement was measured by their responses to three survey instrument items that addressed their involvement. The sample population for this study consisted of participants from the Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services. The participants were all closed-status, Closure 26, indicating that they had completed their vocational rehabilitation program, and the state considered them rehabilitated and employed. The survey instrument was administered as a telephone satisfaction survey regarding participants' satisfaction with the program; participants' perceived involvement in their program; participants' employment status, wages, and benefits; and the participants' perception of the counseling relationship and its process. This study utilized a multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between employment outcome and gender, perceived involvement, and educational level. After controlling for educational level, the analysis examined whether the relationship between perceived involvement and employment outcome is different for males and females. The regression results indicated that the amount of variance explained by the three independent variables was statistically significant.
