Thesis (M.P.H.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2005.
Despite extensive research regarding end of life care and the poor use of advance directives, little attention has been given to the instructional materials. This study evaluated the availability, suitability, and effectiveness of these instructions. The evaluation incorporated measures from guides for developing health education materials, social marketing principles, and health behavior theory constructs. Through a purposive sampling from the medical community, marketing groups, and sites that provide educational opportunities for seniors, only 16% (n = 14) of the 86 sites contacted provided samples appropriate for this investigation. A multi-tiered evaluation found that: 79% (n = 11) of the materials were unsuited for consumers with low literacy skills, 71% (n = 10) did not include key terms with definitions, 71% (n = 10) did not provide examples to illustrate points, and 93% (13) lacked culturally relevant messages to elderly consumers. All samples included messages conveying self-efficacy, yet 50% (n = 7) of them lacked messages indicating benefits to completing advance directives.
