This study examined the effects of space design on organizational culture in a post-secondary educational institution transitioning to an undergraduate university with a focus on the design considerations to support faculty in the new degree programs. The research project included a review of the literature regarding trends in office design, faculty office space, environmental psychology and organizational culture. A review of organizational documents was also completed. Data gathering methods used an appreciative inquiry approach including semi-structured, in-depth interviews and a focus group.

The research findings indicate that faculty office space design affects the organization. When functional office space was lacking some faculty reported being disengaged from the organization, spent minimal time on campus and did not feel valued by the organization. Functional faculty office space was determined to require furnishings with adequate storage space, current technology for each faculty member, and privacy for confidential conversations with students and colleagues.
