High rates of pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease in the adolescent and young adult population have led to a focus on research that explores the factors that influence risk-taking sexual behaviour. However, rather than understanding adolescent sexuality as a behaviour problem, there is a need for research that promotes an understanding of sexuality from a normative developmental perspective that assumes that sexuality can be healthy in adolescents and young adults. This study used qualitative methodology to explore three research questions: How do youth and young adults define sexual health? What sexual health topics are of priority to youth and young adults? What are the primary influences on sexual health decisions of young adults and youth? Ten young adults, five females and five males, participated in qualitative interviews. Grounded theory analysis facilitated the identification of themes relevant to each of the three research questions. Participants defined sexual health in terms of the potential for negative emotional and physical consequences when engaging in sexual activity and the importance of taking preventative measures. The themes that emerged with regard to sexual health topics that participants described as important were prevention, communication, and experiencing sexuality as positive. In terms of influences on sexual health and decision making, participants described a process that initially involved exploration of proscribed gender roles and learned values with regard to sexuality. Participants indicated that as development and maturation progressed sexual experiences and decisions related more to the exploration of adult roles that include intimacy, chosen values, and sexuality as self-expression.
