Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2005.
The Italian Literature of the Fascist Period in Italy is still floating in a sort of limbo, especially in regard to female writers. Too often people believe that consent among intellectuals was almost unanimous during the twenty-one years of dictatorship in Italy, because of total faith in the Regime, or just out of fear.

Although many scholars, writers, poets, artists, and journalists did embrace the Fascist principles with complete trust, a notable number opposed them, and, if they were not able to become militant anti-Fascists, they were nevertheless able to develop and state their dissent, despite censorship and harsh repression. Women in particular assumed an important role in creating a "dissenting network", which would evolve later into the ideals that lead to the Resistance.

Paola Drigo, and, more actively Paola Masino, were among these women. Their works are almost unknown today; yet both had been important representatives of the Italian cultural scene. Atypical if not troubling, they were among the intellectuals who did not fear to acknowledge and then denounce the madness of dictatorship.

Unfortunately, right after the Liberation and the declaration of the Italian Republic in 1946, both writers and their novels seemed to disappear from the Italian literary scene.

It is my intention to explore not only the structures of their novels and the literary devices they employed to express their dissent, but also the reasons that condemned Drigo and Masino's works to the margins.

Hopefully, with my dissertation, I will be able not only to help their works---Fine D'Anno and Maria Zef, by Poala Drigo, Monte Ignoso and Nascita e Morte della Massaia, by Paola Masino, to be appreciated again by keen readers and lovers of Italian literature and culture, but also to demonstrate, through their novels, that they did not fight dictatorship and all kinds of repression in vain.
