Thesis (M.A.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2005.
In the interest of women's health and well-being this study examines the total hours of work, from both paid and unpaid labour, of women from four industrial countries, namely, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and the United States, in order to suggest determinants of women's work behaviour. This thesis also looks at different welfare state policies and institutions to understand why women report working considerably different total hours across countries.

Multivariate analysis results suggest that not only are traditional variables on family structure and human capital significant in influencing women's total work hours but country of residence also matters. In addition, results from another multivariate analysis show that the impact of traditional variables varies across countries.

By examining the welfare states of each country it appears as though the national differences may, in part, arise because of differences in national policies and institutions regarding childcare and women's employment.
