This work analyzes representations of Germany in American newsreels of the thirties. As a reflection of popular sentiment, newsreels demonstrate a dynamically-shifting portrayal of Germany. Linked with positive subjects, reports initially depicted friendly relations and cultural commonalities between Germany and the U.S. With the establishment of the Third Reich, newsreels began to take a negative turn. The shift from democracy to dictatorship brought dramatic projections of Germany's menacing military strength and intolerance, and the causes of American democracy and tolerance were clarified as Nazism was presented as a threat to Europe and a challenge to the "American way of life." Newsreels from the thirties reveal that the psychological war of ideologies pitting democracy against fascism was developed well before the start of World War II. The newsreel representation of Germany transformed from friend to stranger to threat throughout the decade, preparing Americans for its final transition to wartime enemy.
