Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2005.
The field of histology is experiencing a crisis created by staffing shortages. Since timely and appropriate patient diagnosis and treatment is dependent upon the information provided by the careful work of histology laboratory employees, such shortages can have significant ramifications for the health care sector. Current research is limited regarding staffing shortages in histology. Studies have addressed the closing of accredited histology education programs due to declining enrollment, the difficulty in filling medical laboratory personnel positions and the alarming percentage of laboratory workers over the age of forty years and nearing retirement. Studies have not attempted to identify and understand factors related to a decrease in histology employees in clinical laboratories.

The purpose of this study is to examine factors that influence the histology laboratory staff shortage, particularly issues of employee recruitment, employee retention, job satisfaction and motivation, in order to assist policymakers in the development of policy and job design that will lead to a decrease in histology staff turnover. The research questions explored are: What relationship exists between job satisfaction and employee retention in histology laboratories? What relationship exists between job characteristics and job satisfaction in histology laboratories? What relationship exists between job characteristics and the retention of histology laboratory technicians? What relationship exists between years of experience and type of training of histology laboratory technicians? These questions were guided by the importance of these variables in relevant literature.

The study utilized a convenience sample of 56 histology laboratory employees attending the New York State Histotechnological Society Annual Meeting held in Saratoga Springs, New York in May, 2004. The methodology consisted of a self-administered survey design and utilized the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS) and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ). Findings reveal that factors influencing histology employee retention, recruitment, job satisfaction and motivation are: clear and concise communication regarding employee duties and responsibilities, independence, autonomy, opportunity to use skills and knowledge and opportunity for on job training and education. No correlations were uncovered between job satisfaction and job retention and job satisfaction and years of employee experience and education.
