Social support is touted as a critical determinant of health for older adults. With the population of older adults climbing steadily, greater attention is being paid to both the welfare of this expanding group as to rising healthcare costs. Inquiry into the pro-health features of social support is timely. This study examined the relationship between social support exchanges and psychological well-being among older women in assisted living settings.

The structural (network characteristics, social contact, and social integration), functional (received and provided support), and appraisal support (anticipated support, satisfaction, and negative interactions) dynamics of the respondents (N=82) are described. Subsequent analyses explore relationships between respondent characteristics and features of support.

Contrary to narrowly interpreted social exchange theory assertions, the 82 women in this study had dynamic networks, with routine social contact and they exchanged support. The provision of support was hypothesized to be positively related to psychological well-being (depression and life-satisfaction). Tests were conducted to determine whether anticipated support and negative interaction moderated that relationship. Positive relationships were also hypothesized between reciprocity of support, and balanced exchanges with psychological well-being.

Regression analyses revealed that the provision of support, after controlling for personal characteristics, support receipt, and anticipated support, contributed significantly to explaining the variance in depression and life-satisfaction scores. Anticipated support and negative interactions did not moderate this relationship. The findings for reciprocity and balance were mixed with reciprocity explaining a significant proportion of the variance in depression but not life satisfaction whereas the data revealed the reverse for balance.

Over 50% of the study participants scored in the range for clinical depression on the Geriatric Depression Scale. At the same time, exchanging social support was linked with psychological well-being. The lives of older women in assisted living can be enhanced with the development of pro-health policies and interventions that maximize structural, functional, and appraisal support.
