This study explored experiences related to psychological aspects in acupuncture, as they were reported by persons who used this modality for treatment of HIV/AIDS. These experiences were explored through a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with 10 participants. Three psychological elements were identified as significant in the participants' experiences, which included: (1) Acupuncture as a facilitator of psychological change, (2) Perceiving the relationship with the acupuncturist as crucial to the treatment, and (3) Coping with stressors related to HIV/AIDS. The study suggests two models that illustrates the role that acupuncture appears to have played in facilitating psychological change, and in the overall process of coming to terms and coping with HIV/AIDS. Finally, the study suggests a model for understanding the relative strengths and weaknesses of acupuncture and psychotherapy in treatment for psychological problems in the context of chronic illnesses.
