Thesis (M.A.L.S.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2005.
De-institutionalization is often referred to as a social policy that arose after the introduction, and widespread use of psychotropic medication for treatment of mental illness. However, further analysis of this policy reveals a more extensive history, one that reveals long held beliefs about the etiology of mental illness and its treatment. These beliefs continue to influence current policies regarding psychiatric hospitalization. As the number of in-patient psychiatric beds continues to decline, individuals with a mental illness may be forced from the mental health delivery system into the criminal justice system, which is ill-prepared to deal with this population.
