Evidence of deficiencies in emotional experience and processing of emotional information have been demonstrated among psychopaths. However, relatively little research has examined the relationship between psychopathy and accuracy of identification of facial expressions of emotion, an ability that is closely related to capacity for empathy. Research investigating the relationship between psychopathy and understanding of emotion is also scant. The present study investigates the relationship between psychopathy and identification of facial expressions of emotion and understanding of emotion-specific themes, physiological responses, and behaviors. The efficacy of the Machiavellianism Scale (Mach-IV) as a proxy measure of psychopathy is also examined. One-hundred fifty-four male inmates were asked to identify the primary emotion expressed in 60 photographs of human faces. Photographs contained one of five emotions (happy, sad, fear, anger, shame) at one of two different levels of expressed intensity (100% or 60%). Results revealed that psychopathy was significantly negatively correlated with accuracy of identification of facial expressions of emotion overall, but particularly so for happy and sad expressions and faces with a 60% expressed emotion. One-hundred thirty male inmates were presented with pairs of emotion (sad/anger, anger/fear, and sad/fear) and a series of emotion-related concepts, physiological responses, and behaviors. Participants were directed to classify the emotion-related constructs as quickly and accurately as possible. Results revealed no significant differences in either accuracy of classification or reaction time for accurate classifications. Lastly, the Mach-IV was not significantly correlated with psychopathy as measured by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist: Screen Version (PCL:SV), indicating that the Mach-IV is an unsuitable proxy measure of psychopathy, particularly in an incarcerated sample. Overall, these results suggest that psychopathy is associated with a decreased ability for identifying facial expressions of emotion, and may also be associated with deficient understanding of emotional information that falls along the good-bad/happy-sad emotion polarity.
