Thesis (Ph.D.)--Bowling Green State University, 2005.
This research examined aspects of social roles for 48 young adults who are coping with mental illness and 42 of their parents coping with the mental illness of their adult child. Guided by a life course perspective, a newly developed social role measure was used to investigate specific positive and negative social roles and their related aspects. Participant responses from a semi-structured interview were analyzed, including ratings of many aspects of adults' and parents' life related to coping with their own serious mental illness (adults) or that of their child (parents).

Results indicated that levels of role aspects vary depending on demographic variables and that participants report more role investment and role loss in positive than in negative social roles. Reports of formal (e.g. case management) and informal (e.g. social networks) resource usage were also shown to relate to various social role aspects. In addition, aspects of social roles were shown to account for variance in participants' reports of well-being, stress related growth, loneliness, and personal loss due to mental illness beyond that accounted for by the adults' reported symptoms. Implications of the study for research and policy are discussed.
