Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2005.
The growing number of older adults in the U.S. coupled with increasing life expectancies brings to light a vital issue. Many older people could be considered as aging unsuccessfully; poorly managed physical health conditions, inadequate coping abilities, spiritual distress, and unhappiness with life are characteristics suggestive of unsuccessful aging. Successful aging is an individual's perceived favorable outcome in adapting to the cumulative physiologic and functional alterations associated with the passage of time, while experiencing spiritual connectedness and sense of meaning and purpose in life. This author constructed a mid-range theory of successful aging based on this definition. The purpose of the present study was to test one proposition of the new theory of successful aging. The researcher sought to determine the relationship between creativity and successful aging. Fifty-seven older adults were randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. Participants completed the Arthritis Impact Management Scale, Similes Preference Inventory, Life Satisfaction Index A, and the Purpose in Life Test before and after an 8 week creativity intervention consisting of reminiscence, storytelling, and poetry. Treatment participants received the intervention over the course of 8 weeks of hourly group sessions. During this time, control participants attended routine activities at the senior centers where the sample was located. Measures of creativity and successful aging did not change over time, nor were there any significant differences between the treatment and control groups. However, significant differences in creativity, life satisfaction, and purpose in life were found for when Black participants were compared to White ones. The outcomes in this study evoke additional questions about successful aging that will guide further research.
