The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of spirituality and social factors on depression and anxiety in the elderly retirement community population. Two multiple regression analyses were used to examine this, controlling for cognitive dysfunction, medications, and medical conditions. Fifty-two volunteers from four continuing care retirement communities were given three assessments individually. The Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) was used to control for cognitive compromise among participants. State-Trait Personality Inventory (STPI) and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWB) were used to assess for depression and anxiety and levels of spiritual well-being, respectively.

The results showed that depression and anxiety were negatively correlated with activity level and spiritual well-being (ps < .05). However, family visitation was not found to be correlated with either depression or anxiety. When examined alone, only one of the independent variables, activity level, individually accounted for decreased anxiety (p < .05). Activity level accounted for 7.2% of the variation of anxiety levels in this population. Activity level and spiritual well-being approached significance in their effect on levels of depression and anxiety. Although not all results were significant as expected, they demonstrated a need for further research in this area. Further emphasis on activities and perhaps spiritual well-being could contribute to decreased depression and anxiety in the elderly retirement community population.
