The dissertation is an exploration of the concept of self-efficacy and its relationship to illness self-management for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). There are five components to the dissertation. The first chapter introduces the constructs of interest: major depression, self-management and self-efficacy, a statement of the problem, and an overview of the manuscripts to follow.

520 $a The first manuscript explores the critical elements of depression, self-management and self-efficacy and theoretically describes the relationships among them. The third chapter is a manuscript describing a methodological study designed to develop and test a measure of self-efficacy for self-management of depression. Results indicate that the measure is a reliable and valid instrument to be used in clinical intervention and further research regarding the relationship of self-efficacy to self-management of major depression.
520 $a In the fourth chapter a research proposal for a clinical intervention pilot study to test a self-management training program is presented. The program, based on the theoretical and research work described in the previous manuscripts, and the proposal, represents a new model of illness managements for major depression. The goals of the program are to build self-efficacy in participants, test the effectiveness of the model, continue testing of the instrument developed in the dissertation study, and continue theoretical and clinical exploration of the constructs described here. A discussion of the implications of the findings of the mythological study and projections for future research in chapter 5 concludes the dissertation. The instrument development study, the theoretical conceptualization upon which it was based and the resulting proposal for interventions that lead to increased self-efficacy and self-management ability in this population are a solid basis for evidence based clinical practice and continuing research.
