The problem. The problem is the increased presentation throughout the various advertising media of new prescription medications being produced that can successfully treat a wide range of mental illnesses. This highly visible presentation renders a public perception that psychotherapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), are largely ineffective in comparison to the psychotropic medications and are not an effective intervention in treating mental illness.

A critical review of recent literature (1988--2001) relating to the application and effectiveness of CBT as a effective intervention in the treatment of various mental health disorders of children and adults was performed and reported on in this study. This study reviewed a cross-section of various modalities to determine where CBT is still being used and to determine whether its application produced significant successful results, compared to advertised claims for psychotropic medications.

A critical review of the recent literature relating to CBT substantiates CBT as a powerful and highly effective therapeutic intervention in the treatment of psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, eating disorders, interpersonal relations, marital distress, panic attacks, phobias, and more. A review of the literature showed that CBT continued to be a widely used intervention in the treatment of many mental disorders and behavior problems and that its use produced significantly positive results in many applications where psychotropic medications could not be used.
