This study examined the various uses of the English language (EL) in large private manufacturing/exporting industries in Korea. The study inquired into the proportion of the workforce that was screened for their EL proficiency prior to employment, and that which continued to train and/or test it during employment. Then, the study examined the actual use of English on the job. To do so, the influence of two factors---functional organization and individual job level---were measured.

A stratified random sampling method was used to conduct the study in businesses comprising the four functional organizations---Administration, Production, Sales & Marketing and Research & Development (R & D)---and four individual job levels---Staff Employee, Assistant Manager, Manager and Senior Manager. As a result, five Korean businesses representing three industries---electronics, steel, automobiles---were sampled for this study. A total of 251 college-educated respondents were included in the final analysis. Chi-Square tests were performed for the first part of the study. Secondly, One-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to illustrate the relationship between functional organization and EL use, and that between job level and EL use.

The findings revealed that in recent years, 73% of the population seeking employment was screened for their EL skills, prior to being hired; moreover, over 90% continued to test them during employment. This study also found that various corporately subsidized EL programs exist both in Korea and abroad. While domestic programs attract moderate levels of participation, especially at the lower job levels, higher job levels are significantly more likely to be sent on overseas missions and programs. Finally, Sales & Marketing, as an organization, was significantly more likely to employ their EL skills on the job. Although EL skill demand on the job appears to escalate with rising job level, a statistically significant finding was observed only in the use of EL listening on the job.
